New HoF inductee Mariano Rivera, in our Cooperstown interview Fri., reflected on being the last full-time No. 42 in MLB: "It moved me to always do my best, so I can make Mr. Jackie Robinson proud of me. And that was my challenge — I wanted to do whatever it takes to keep the legacy that Mr. Jackie Robinson left us." Robinson's widow Rachel said in a statement this week that Rivera "carried Jack's legacy with dignity, distinction and courage" and "becoming the first unanimous inductee in the Hall of Fame's history is a wonderfully fitting tribute to Mariano, a man of stellar character who has given so much to the game, and who continues to give so generously to our broader community. I am thrilled for him."

The key second-half player for all 30 teams

Whether it's a star who needs to step up or a prospect to watch the rest of the way, every team has someone who could define their season.

William Weinbaum ESPN

A day after a foul ball struck a child at Kauffman Stadium, the Royals said Mon. they'll extend safety netting — KC is the 7th team to announce such plans since a chilling nationally televised episode in Houston May 29 when a Cubs foul liner past third base injured a toddler. The White Sox installed netting to the foul poles — a first — and the Nationals to nearly the poles. The Dodgers, Pirates & Orioles said they'll lengthen netting and the Rangers unveiled extensions for their new ballpark opening in 2020. All 30 parks have netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts, but several fans have been injured since May 29 and pressure is mounting for more protection.
