| Associated Press WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - - There's no mistaking big Julian Vandervelde when he steps up to the plate. And there was no mistaking the home run the Davenport, Iowa, first-basemen hit at the Little League World Series on Monday.
Pitcher Dan O'Donnell threw a two-hitter while striking out seven. Michael Mitchell had a hit and scored three runs as Davenport won its Series opener. Alex Sobolov had a double and Jarek Ostrowski singled for Goffstown, which dropped to 0-2 following Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bellaire, Texas.
In two games, Goffstown has yet to score a run and managed just three hits. In the day's other game, Tokyo improved to 2-0 by hanging on for a 9-8 win over Toronto. Two other games were scheduled: Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, took on Maracaibo; and Bellaire, Texas, faced Vancouver, Wash. Up 1-0, Davenport added two more in the third inning when Mitchell hit a bloop one-out double off second-baseman Eric Szumiez's glove and came home on Vandervelde's homer, measured at 239 feet. Davenport sealed the victory with two more runs on O'Donnell's RBI-single and Vandervelde scoring on catcher's Stephen Desjarlais' errant pickoff throw to third.
