MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat look to continue shaking off the postseason disappointment of the previous two seasons and add to the first-round failings of the Detroit Pistons tonight when the teams meet in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference series.

Jamal Mashburn scored a playoff career-high 29 points and drained two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Heat posted a convincing 95-85 victory over the Pistons in Game 1 on Saturday.

Miami held the NBA's second-highest scoring team during the regular season more than 18 points below its average behind a huge defensive effort from Alonzo Mourning, who blocked a team playoff-record eight shots.

The second-seeded Heat, who lost to the New York Knicks in the first round each of the last two seasons, won without starting point guard Tim Hardaway, who remains questionable for tonight with sprains in his right ankle and left foot.

Rookie Anthony Carter started in place of Hardaway and had 10 points, seven assists, four steals and three turnovers in 35 minutes.

"(Carter) is fearless," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "He got tired at the end of the game, and that's why we had some trouble finishing them off."

Hardaway did manage to get into a jawing match with Detroit forward Jerry Stackhouse from the bench as the teams left the floor.

"We were just getting a little more excitement for Game Two," Stackhouse said of the incident. "I see these guys in the summertime and we're going to have a little jawing here and there. But that's all it is."

Pistons' superstar forward Grant Hill was clearly hobbled by a bruised ankle, managing just 13 points and none in the fourth quarter. Hill and Stackhouse were the Eastern Conference's top scoring tandem during the regular season but were held to 36 points after averaging nearly 50 per contest.

"Grant Hill not being 100 percent makes it difficult," said Pistons interim coach George Irvine. "I don't want to play him if it's going to hurt him further. He said it was bothering him but he wanted to play."

Detroit has been ousted in the first round each of its last four playoff appearances.

Game 3 is in Detroit on Saturday.
