Howard could come up big for young Nuggets

DENVER -- Here are five observations of the Denver Nuggets from training camp:

1. Who will be the Nuggets' starting point guard on opening night? Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson, Tim Hardaway and Mark Jackson are not going to be wearing Denver uniforms this season. Now, it's up to the kids to run the Nuggets' offense unless general manager Kiki Vandeweghe has something up his sleeve. If there was a game tomorrow, the Nuggets would start second-year point guard Kenny Satterfield. After struggling for most of last season, the 22-year-old played well late in the season in four games as a starter, averaging 13.3 points, nine assists and one steal. While Satterfield is improving, it will be extremely tough to ask him to play consistently well as a starter. The backup is little-known rookie Junior Harrington of Division II Wingate. Harrington is an above-average defender and a steal pickup for the Nuggets, but he still needs to improve offensively, has zero NBA experience and will go from playing in front of crowds of 1,000 to some with more than 15,000. If the Nuggets don't make a trade or sign a free agent to aid the point guard situation, look for them to lean on veteran George McCloud.

Juwon Howard
Juwan Howard will be surrounded by youth with the Nuggets this season.
2. Expect forward Juwan Howard to have possibly the best season of his career. During his 28 games with Denver after acquired from Dallas last season, the 6-9, 250-pounder averaged 17.9 points per game. Considering Howard has the green light and is now more comfortable with his Mile High surroundings, expect him to challenge his 22.1 point career-best average he established in his second season (1995-96). One of the Nuggets' biggest concerns is scoring, and there is no doubt that Howard can fill that void. Plus, the 29-year-old has extra incentive since he will be a free agent next offseason.

3. Keep an eye on forward-center Marcus Camby. The 6-11, 235-pounder only played 29 games last season with New York primarily due to a hip injury. During his six NBA seasons, Camby has never played more than 63 games. Although Camby has recovered fine and hasn't had any relapses in practice, the Nuggets are watching him closely and giving him rest when needed. If healthy, a Howard-Camby combination in the post could be an exciting one for Denver.

4. How will lottery-pick rookies Nikoloz Tskitishvili and Nene Hilario do this season? Expect the 6-10, 260-pound Hilario to make a bigger impact immediately. The Brazilian is already making noise in practice and has good post and rebounding skills. The 20-year-old's toughest challenge is not being able to speak English, although he is taking lessons. Tskitishvili has a strong 3-point shot and above-average passing skills. But although the 7-0, 228-pounder has gained 14 pounds, the 19-year-old still needs to strengthen his body to adhere to the pounding in the NBA. Expect Skita to make a bigger impact in the second half of the season.

5. The Nuggets are expected to have five rookies, along with a rookie coach in Jeff Bzdelik this season. After 12 years as an assistant split between the Washington Bullets and Miami Heat, Bzdelik is making his coaching debut this season in difficult fashion with a very young roster. Bzdelik is a tough-love coach, who stresses hard work and defense. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to a team that is expected to have many more downs than ups this season.
