Camp question
Will the Magic ever get over the loss of Shaquille O'Neal? It was 1996 when Shaq abandoned Orlando, and this team has never gotten over it. With a front line full of question marks, the Magic have resorted to signing Shawn Kemp, whose off-court problems once would have prohibited him from finding a home in Orlando with this current ownership.

Camp project
Tracy McGrady gets better and better every year, but the Magic lack quality at power forward and center, the two major areas of concern for head coach Doc Rivers. He has old veterans with aging legs (Horace Grant, Kemp), reserve types (Andrew DeClercq) and young unproven talent (Stephen Hunter and first-round pick Ryan Humphries). Pat Garrity returns, and the Magic bought out Patrick Ewing because he could no longer play.

FANTASY GAMES KEY CAMPER
Who to watch: Few teams would have a need for an old, fat, past-his-prime power forward like Shawn Kemp, but the Magic do. Kemp got no playing time last season in Portland, but with the proper motivation and a chance, he could be a usable fantasy player this season with scoring in the teens and seven-plus boards a game. Don't laugh; he's not that far removed from his Cleveland days.
— Eric Karabell

Camp comeback
In pre-preseason workouts, Grant Hill has been exceptional. It looks like the Magic will finally get the player they hoped to land with their big free agent move in 2000. Hill, a six-time All-Star, has been plagued with ankle troubles since coming from Detroit. He has played in only 18 games his first two years in Orlando. He turns 30 this October. If he's anything close to his old self, the Magic have two superstars on the wings and could make some noise in the East.

Camp controversy
It's not really a controversy, but the Magic are also worried about the point guard position. Darrell Armstrong has showed signs of slowing down -- he turned 34 last June -- and they lost Troy Hudson to Minnesota via free agency. That's why Hill's return is so key. Doc Rivers has always envisioned Hill playing point forward and running the show.
