| ESPN.com Not surprisingly, the most e-mails were about one Jason Williams of the Kings, both good and bad. Some people said he's horribly overrated. Others defended him by saying the kid's only in his second year, so how can be overrated. Still others said that Williams will be great, so get off his back. Other candidates who got a lot of votes and e-mails were Juwan Howard, Christian Laettner and Derek Fisher. Don't forget to vote in this week's Decision 2000 topic on best coaches. Here is the poll from last week and some of the better comments below.
I'm tired of Jason Williams. He's a player with too much flash that should not even be starting on any team other than the Clippers (they need all the help he can get). Let's face it, there are a ton of guards in the NBA who could do the things that he does but don't because it will be called "streetball" and they will find themselves deep on the bench. The NBA promotes the guy like he should be on the Dream Team. Let the true stars shine all by themselves, they don't need help.
All your supposedly overrated players are right on the money, but the one in particular who I have a major beef with is none other than Juwan Howard. I can't stand him. Here was a guy who epitomized the word hustle and effort, the perfect player, well liked, great attitude ... then that dreaded day happened (the ridiculous $100-mil contract) and now he looks like everything you don't want your kid or anyone to be. And I hope he's reading this.
I'd like to say something about you guys saying Calbert Cheaney is overrated. It's not like Boston brought him in to be our savior or anything, and although his scoring is way down, he really hasn't been taking that many shots. Also, he is by far the best defensive player the Celtics have on that team, shutting down the other team's big scorer on many occasions. So that's why Calbert Cheaney should definitely not be considered overrated.
You mentioned two of the three overrated stars
in Boston, but you missed the big one: Mr. Antoine Walker.
This guy thinks that he is the NBA's greatest player, and
maybe could be if he would play like one night in and
night out. Rick Pitino is a good coach, no matter
what anyone says, but he has had to deal with trading everything that he had going for him just to keep payroll from
skyrocketing.
Close second is newly portly Shawn Kemp. Wasn't this guy
going to own the league in a few years after he took the
Sonics to the Finals, and didn't he have one of the highest
verticals in the league? Yes, until he too gave up trying
and got traded to the Cavs. Now instead of dunking he gets
rejected by the rim because he can't get his fat bum off
the floor. Oh well, at least Kemp was good at one point.
You have to see Vin Baker live to see how useless a man that big can be under the basket. It's truly stunning. And it's not that he's fat ... he's looking a little trimmer this year, which makes it all the more troubling.
I thought Vin Baker was overrated three years ago. After
the Sonics gave him a contract well beyond his worth he has
failed to produce in two big ways. The first and most
obvious is his lack of production. It is very easy to see
and difficult to watch game after game. What I think is of
greater concern is that "intangible" quality we always hear
about. In Baker's case, instead of providing leadership and a
positive example for his team he has been proven to be a
complete slacker. He presents no threat to any player he
faces. The only time he can score is when he is completely
unchallenged. He should have been benched two years ago.
Kenny Anderson may be overrated, but you try to dish out eight assists a game with Antoine Walker and his point forward tactics. Anderson's defense may be lacking but he is averaging 14 points, five assists and two steals, which is not that bad. He has been on four different teams in eight years, and that doesn't help. He may be in the top-five list of point guards if that Nets team would have stayed somewhat intact. He was the second option there, while in Boston he doesn't even look to score. I am disgusted to find Kenny's name on this list of overrated.
As a lifelong Lakers fan, I'm glad to see someone thinks Derek Fisher is as bad as I think he is. This guy is atrocious. I start to squirm every time he touches the ball. The worst thing about this guy is he always seems to have the green light to shoot the ball. Many times I've watched games this year and last, and when we've had a fast break good ol' Derek will pull up for a three only to find the iron unkind. I can't stand it anymore. Hopefully, knowing Phil Jackson's penchant for taller guards will mean the end for Derek as a Laker.
I think Bryant Reeves is very overrated! He's a 7-foot center on a losing team. Just because he's big he will always have a place in the NBA, which is sad because other smaller players work hard and because they are smaller they don't get a chance to play. I think he's a good backup for a playoff team, but no way he's a franchise player. Watch the Pistons get him, they always pick up overrated players from losing teams, like Christian Laettner.
I think Derek Fisher is THE most overrated player in the league. I have no idea why the Lakers gave him that contract extension when Phil Jackson doesn't like short guards. I am a hardcore Lakers fan and I watch a lot of their games. I hardly ever see him on the floor, and when I do he is turning the ball over or missing shots. Before this year he was a good hustle player and was fine coming off the bench, but he doesn't fit in well with the style the Lakers play. Sometimes I have this recurring dream that we never traded Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell. If only they gave Phil a chance to get that team to work together.
Vin Baker makes me ill. Back in the days when I could still bear watching the Sonics play, I thought we got a fair trade for Shawn Kemp. Baker played great for one year and then turned into the marshmallow man and started clanging free throws like Shaq. I think I can speak for just about any Sonics fan when I say "Shawn, we miss you." Thank God we have Gary.
I don't understand how Howard ever got paid the same kind of money as Alonzo, but the Wizards' mistake is really a talent who does need a change of scenery. Why would anyone draft Bryant Reeves with a lotto pick? He is a 7-foot backup and all he has is size. Sort of reminds me when the Wolves wasted a pick on Luc Longley. If Williams' game was as good as his flashy passes maybe the Kings would win 60 games. But for now they have another wannabe superstar without any game.
I'm a Celtics fan and I'd have to say that Kenny Anderson is overrated. He only averages five assists as a point guard? Granted the Celtics may be the worst shooting team of all-time, but how can you be as talented as Kenny and only dish out five assists? Derek Fisher is the worst point guard in the NBA next to Dana Barros. He couldn't hit a barn, nevertheless an outside shot. He's not even good enough to play on my Div. III college team. As far as Vin Baker goes, he's a solid player but needs to hit the treadmill some more and get in shape. But I like his game. The Wizards need to figure out that Juwan Howard is not a small forward. He just needs to go somewhere else because his game is just ruined in Washington.
It is very disappointing watching the unwarranted hype directed toward Jason Williams. He is unquestionably the dumbest player in the league, consistently engaging in unnecessary passing and ballhandling. His shot selection is terrible and his defense is the worst in the league. If the Kings plan on making a serious run at he NBA title, they need to bench Jason Williams and play someone who understands how to play championship basketball and not playground ball. The NBA and NBC should be ashamed of themselves promoting this kid!
There are plenty of worthy candidates on this list. But what makes overrated? Very popular but not as good would mean Jason Williams. Overpaid by heaps would mean Juwan Howard. But my vote goes to Derek Fisher. The fact that he's getting paid at all means he's overrated. He got, what, $25 million for 8 years? This for a guy who shoots just better than 30 percent. Sure Williams' shooting percentage isn't much better, but J.W. takes a lot of silly shots. Fish's 34 percent shooting comes mostly on layups AND the plenty of wide open looks that playing with Shaq in the triangle offense gives him. And his attempts at making up for his horrific offense with hustle are almost laughable. His penchant for flopping while trying to draw charges are annoying. His attempts at "diving" for loose balls AFTER it's already out of bounds is just plain ridiculous. Granted, I'm a Laker fan, and my frustration with this "alleged" player may be influencing my decision. But, Derek Fisher IS the most overrated player in the league.Mike John Los Angeles
C'mon, how can you not pick Christian Laettner as the most overrated? At least Juwan Howard had a hey-day, as well as most of the other players on this list. But Laettner has never really performed like he was expected in the NBA. I've seen him play many-a-game in the Detroit uniform, and he always makes me wonder. What happened between the transfer from college to the pros? Is there really any doubt about this man being terribly overrated?
Juwan Howard: too much money for too little talent. With the money paid to him they could have gotten a real franchise player in the mold of Grant Hill or Tim Duncan. Right now, Jordan's best move in the executive office is to ship him out to other teams (are there willing takers?) to free some money in the salary cap so that he could shop for cheap, underrated and hungry players who could certainly produce more than what Howard is doing now. Fire the executive who had the brilliant idea of paying Howard the $100M salary.
I believe that Christian Laettner is the most overrated player in the NBA. It first, I was excited to hear that he was coming to the Pistons. Now I realize that I was basing his heroic arrival on his college accomplishments. Maybe it is unfair to discuss this disappointment without Detroit having a real center but I would think that Mikki Moore had a better college career than Christian. In addition, although it has improved somewhat, his crybaby attitude does nothing for our "bad boyz" image. He is the Jeff George of the NBA.
