Center pulled over for erratic driving, not cited

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs' David Robinson's busy day Tuesday didn't end with his role in helping San Antonio secure a spot in the NBA conference semifinals.

Robinson in less than 24 hours also was pulled over by police for erratic driving and accepted a $1 million check to help build his East Side school.

While remaining focused on a basketball championship, the 7-footer is still proceeding with plans to start a low-cost private school for some of the city's poorest kids.

"I want to do whatever it takes to get those two things done," Robinson told the San Antonio Express-News after accepting the big check Tuesday, a donation from the Spurs to the nascent Carver Academy. "I'm trying to back up and enjoy the journey."

Robinson said both the countdown to the NBA Finals and raising the remaining $3.5 million needed to open the Carver Academy by September demands mental toughness.

"It's right up there as one of the great challenges of my life," Robinson said of the school, with 4-year-old son Justin on his lap. "Obviously, I want to win the second championship. Those are probably the two greatest."

San Antonio beat Minnesota 97-84 Monday night to advance to the second round of the playoffs, with Robinson scoring 21 points.

Robinson and wife Valerie announced in 1997 they would donate $5 million to build the Carver Academy. They hope to create a private, religious school on the East Side available to low-income families, especially those in the neighborhood.

Later Tuesday, after a late-night flight home from Minneapolis, Robinson was stopped along San Antonio's Loop 1604, with law officers saying that he appeared to be weaving in traffic.

But the patrol officer who stopped Robinson didn't write him a ticket.

"This time is so exciting for me," Robinson said. "It's an incredible buzz."
