Ewing reportedly agrees to deal with Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic have reached a tentative agreement with free agent center Patrick Ewing, according to a published report.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Friday that the Magic have come to terms with Ewing, who played last season with the Seattle SuperSonics, and are hoping to do the same with power forward Horace Grant.

Magic spokesman Joel Glass refused to comment on the story. No new contracts can be signed until Wednesday.

Ewing, 38, and Grant, 36, have played a combined 30 NBA seasons.

Magic general manager John Gabriel met separately this week with Grant and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, but no agreement was reached, the Sentinel reported. Grant played for the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Both veterans would be taking a pay cut to come to the Magic. Ewing earned $14 million with the Sonics last year and Grant made $5.9 million with the Lakers.

Handcuffed by salary cap restrictions, the Magic are trying to land both players by splitting the $4.5 million salary-cap exception.
