Griffin to fill void in Taylor's absence

SportsTicker

HOUSTON -- Eddie Griffin, a 19-year-old forward who the Houston Rockets acquired for three first-round picks, signed a multi-year contract on Wednesday.

As per terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the deal is worth $5.314 million over three years and includes a club option for a fourth season.

All contracts for first-round draft picks are subject to potential 20 percent increases.

Griffin was the seventh overall pick by the New Jersey Nets, who traded his rights to the Rockets for Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong.

After playing just one season at Seton Hall, Griffin averaged 13.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 10 games for Houston at the Los Angeles Summer Pro League and Rocky Mountain Review.

The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Griffin may end up starting on a team that is without top forward Maurice Taylor, who will miss the entire season with an Achilles' injury.

As training camp approaches, Houston's only other forwards are Kenny Thomas and Dan Langhi. The team also has rookie swingman Terence Morris and veterans Glen Rice and Walt Williams, who primarily play the perimeter.

In Griffin, the Rockets will be relying on the sixth-youngest player in the NBA.

Griffin was sensational in his only season at Seton Hall, leading the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks. He had 21 double-doubles and the first triple-double in school history.
