Francis arrested after running red light at 5 a.m.

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Injured Houston Rockets point guard Steve Francis was arrested Sunday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

Francis, 24, was stopped around 5 a.m. after an officer saw him run a red light on Houston's near-southwest side, police department spokesman Alvin Wright said.

"The officer stopped him and, based upon evidence that he was drinking, the officer arrested Mr. Francis and took him to central patrol, where he was booked for DWI," Wright said.

Francis bonded out of jail early Sunday afternoon, Wright said. The Houston Rockets did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

Francis did not comment as he left the jail. A hearing is set for Friday.

Francis led the team with 21 points a game and was the top rebounder among NBA guards when he went down with a left foot injury Nov. 25.

The Rockets haven't won since he went on the injured list and are mired in a 13-game skid. Francis is expected back in one to three weeks.

The arrest came two days after the NBA suspended Rockets forward Maurice Taylor, himself out for the season with a right Achilles' tendon injury, for five games next year for drug use. Taylor acknowledged smoking marijuana.

Francis was the second overall choice of the Vancouver Grizzlies in the 1999 draft but refused to sign, eventually forcing a trade to Houston that August.
