AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dan Majerle of the Phoenix Suns, a 14-year NBA veteran, says he will retire after this season.
"It's time," Majerle told the Traverse City Record-Eagle. "My body isn't what it used to be. It's a real struggle some days."
Majerle, 36, played at Traverse City Central High School and at Central Michigan University.
"I thought at the beginning of the season that this might be it, then I broke my finger (in October) and other things just followed," he said.
Majerle played 24 minutes Tuesday in the Suns' 99-71 victory over the Detroit Pistons, the most action he had seen in two weeks.
He hit three consecutive three-point shots at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth. In addition to his nine points, Majerle also had two steals and a rebound in his final appearance in his home state.
"It's hard not to be happy when you win by 30," Majerle said. "I got a chance to play and I had some fun."
Majerle, who led Team USA in scoring during the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, was a first-round pick of the Suns in the 1988 NBA draft.
He played seven seasons for Phoenix and was named to three All-Star games before being traded to Cleveland following the 1994-95 season.
Majerle set a then-NBA Finals series record with 17 three-pointers in the Suns' loss to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in 1993.
Majerle played one season for the Cavaliers before signing with Miami as a free agent. He played five seasons with the Heat, then returned to Phoenix last fall.
He has scored more than 10,000 points in his NBA career. |
