Jay Williams replaces Allen on U.S. team

Associated Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Jay Williams, the second overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA draft last June, was selected Wednesday to replace Ray Allen of the Milwaukee Bucks on the U.S. basketball team in the World Championships.

Allen withdrew earlier this week with a knee injury.

Williams, who starred at Duke, had been an alternate on the team. Earlier, Baron Davis of the New Orleans Hornets replaced Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets, who withdrew because of a groin injury.

The championships take place in Indianapolis Aug. 29-Sept. 8.

The rest of the team includes Elton Brand and Andre Miller of the Los Angeles Clippers; Michael Finley and Raef LaFrentz of Dallas; Reggie Miller and Jeremaine O'Neal of Indiana; Antonio Davis of Toronto; Shawn Marion of Phoenix; Paul Pierce of Boston and Ben Wallace of Detroit.

Nick Collison, who plays at the University of Kansas, is an alternate.
