PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire has asked to be traded, multiple sources have told The Oregonian.
Stoudamire would not confirm the report in Wednesday's editions, but he acknowledged a trade was possible now that the Trail Blazers have signed free agent guard Jeff McInnis and traded for guard Antonio Daniels. If there is no trade, Stoudamire said he'll fight to keep his starting role in Portland's backcourt. "The bottom line is that I don't ever see anybody coming up in here and taking my spot," he said. "The only way I could see somebody ever taking my spot is if I'm traded out of a Blazers' uniform." As Stoudamire was holding a basketball camp for youngsters on Tuesday, the Trail Blazers were introducing McInnis, their latest acquisition. McInnis heated up the trade speculation when he was asked whether the team had hinted about future moves. "They did tell me they were trying to move a point guard," McInnis said. "But nothing's guaranteed." The Trail Blazers signed McInnis, a five-year veteran who has spent the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, to a three-year-deal worth more than $9 million on Monday. Last week, Portland sent Erick Barkley, Steve Kerr and a second-round draft pick next year to San Antonio in exchange for Daniels, Charles Smith and Amal McCaskill. Stoudamire has three years left on a contract which will pay him more than $13 million this season. He currently faces felony drug possession charges stemming from a search of his home in February. He has pleaded innocent to the charges. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 assists last season. "In everybody's perfect world, I guess (a trade) is the perfect solution," Stoudamire said. ``But I have never been one to bail on a situation. When the going gets tough, I don't want to be the one going. "Now if they trade me, that's different. But as far as I'm concerned, I'm here, I expect to be here for training camp, and I expect to win the spot." |
