The Orlando Magic are looking at Shawn Kemp as a possible solution to their front-court problems, the Orlando Sentinel reported Saturday. The club is interested in speaking with Kemp and seeing him work out, a source told the newspaper. A meeting is expected within the next two weeks. Kemp, the former all-star whose career has been marred by weight problems and drug abuse, is looking for a new team after he forfeited $25 million of a $46.5 million contract in a buyout agreement with the Portland Trail Blazers. He would prefer to play in the Eastern Conference, and no team in the East needs a post player more than the Magic. After ballooning to 280 pounds this past season, Kemp -- who played at his best in the NBA between 240 and 250 pounds -- has been training in Los Angeles. Magic General Manager John Gabriel has dodged specific questions about Kemp, but he does not hide the fact that his team must be creative in solving its front-court quandary. "We haven't ruled out anybody," Gabriel told the Sentinel. "We want to win. In order to win, we will explore all possibilities." |
