Szczerbiak wants to practice before returning to lineup

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Wally Szczerbiak was activated from the injured list Monday after participating in his first full-contact practice in three months.

To make room for Szczerbiak -- who's missed all but four games this season with a sprained little toe on his left foot -- the Wolves waived reserve forward Reggie Slater.

Minnesota hosts Golden State on Wednesday, but Szczerbiak said he wouldn't be ready quite that soon.

"I want to get a few more practices under my belt, a few more workouts,'' Szczerbiak said. "My foot felt good. It's the way a foot's supposed to feel. And it hasn't felt this way in three months.''

Szczerbiak dislocated the toe on Oct. 8 in a preseason game against Milwaukee, returned a month later but went back to the bench on Nov. 19 when the injury flared up.

Guards Terrell Brandon and Felipe Lopez, both likely out for the season, remain on the Wolves' injured list.

Slater, whose contract was not guaranteed, was cut for financial reasons. Teams are required to pay players on non-guaranteed contracts for the rest of the season if they're on the roster after Friday.

Slater played in 26 games, averaging 3.1 points on 54 percent shooting.
