Jackson has 10,142 assists for No. 2 all-time

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Mark Jackson of the Utah Jazz overtook Magic Johnson for second place on the NBA's career assist list.

Jackson set up a 22-foot baseline jumper by Calbert Cheaney with 8:35 remaining against Cleveland on Sunday. It was his 10,142nd assist and fifth of the game.

Jackson received a standing ovation when he was replaced 11 seconds later by all-time leader John Stockton.

The 37-year-old Jackson, playing in his 1,238th game, tied Johnson when he set up Andre Kirilenko for a 3-pointer with 11:20 to play. Johnson averaged 11.2 assists in 906 games over his career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jackson is in his 16th season and first with Utah. He began his pro career in New York in 1987, then played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana, Denver and Toronto before returning to the Knicks two years ago. He signed with Utah as a free agent in October.

Jackson is more than 5,000 assists behind Stockton, who is in his 19th season with the Jazz.
