Monday roundup: Ollie to join LeBron

ESPN.com news services

Cleveland Cavaliers: Kevin Ollie, one of the most coveted point guards on the free-agent market, told ESPN.com on Monday night that he has verbally committed to signing with the Cavs.

The steady Ollie, 30, will receive a five-year deal worth $15 million, giving the Cavaliers an experienced floor leader to ease the pressure on teen sensation LeBron James, who is expected to play long stretches at point guard in his rookie season.

ESPN's David Aldridge reported earlier Monday that Milwaukee and Cleveland were bidding for Ollie's services. Ollie, who finished last season as Seattle's only true point guard after the Gary Payton trade, has played for nine teams in his six NBA seasons.

"It's a blessing," Ollie said. "It definitely feels great to have security, which I've never had before."

The Sonics offered Ollie a three-year contract to stay, but was trumped by Cleveland and Milwaukee, which was offering a four-year contract. Seattle and Milwaukee are thus left to resume their search for an experienced point guard. Both teams drafted rookie point guards last month -- No. 14 pick Luke Ridnour (Sonics) and No. 8 pick T.J. Ford (Bucks) -- and are looking for a veteran to lessen the burden on the newcomers.

Phoenix Suns: The Suns, intent on keeping their core together instead of pursuing outside free agents this off-season, have secured a verbal commitment from center Jake Voskuhl, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports.

Voshkul and the Suns reached terms Sunday night on a three-year deal worth just over $5 million, according to agent Mark Bartlestein. Voskuhl is expected to sign the contract Wednesday, the first day free agents can sign with NBA teams.

"Jake is going to be back with the Suns," Bartlestein said.

With a payroll in the $60 million range, the Suns' free-agent focus this summer centers around retaining Voskuhl and forward Scott Williams.

The 6-11, 245-pound Voskuhl averaged just 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game last season, but drew interest from several teams after improving his production in the playoffs. In his third season out of Connecticut, Voskuhl averaged 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game in the Suns' six-game loss to San Antonio in the first round, highlighted by his game-winning shot in Game 4 over Tim Duncan.

Also, the Suns signed the first of their two first-round selections, Zarko Cabarkapa, to a three-year contract believed to be worth about $3.4 million. Cabarkapa was the 17th overall pick in the draft.

Cabarkapa joined the Suns' rookie camp at America West Arena Monday and is expected to play for Phoenix's team in the upcoming Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City.
