Rajon Rondo's contract option, worth $2.09 million for the 2009-10 season, will be picked up by the Boston Celtics, the team announced on Tuesday.
"It makes me feel good, they still want me," Rondo said, according to the Boston Globe.
Rondo averaged 10.6 points with 5.1 assists with the Celtics last season, his second in the NBA.
He will be eligible to sign a long-term contract, which would go into effect for the 2010-11 season, next summer. Rondo and his agent are eager to get a deal done but the Celtics have not commented on the matter.
Boston only has three guaranteed contracts (Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Kendrick Perkins) on the books for the 2010 season, which will feature a star-studded free agent class including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili, Chris Bosh and Yao Ming.
"We understand what our commitments are," general manager Danny Ainge said about 2010, according to the Globe. "But we are not looking at that now; we are trying to win."
