Davis suspended for drug violation

LOS ANGELES -- Clippers swingman Ricky Davis was suspended five games Monday for violating terms of the NBA's drug program.

The NBA said Davis' suspension will begin with the next game for which he is eligible and physically able to play. Davis, who hasn't played since Nov. 22 because of a sore left knee, is averaging 4.3 points in 13 games in his first season with the Clippers.

The 29-year-old Davis signed as an unrestricted free agent after averaging 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 82 games for the Miami Heat last season. He has also played for Charlotte, Cleveland, Boston and Minnesota.

"We've been informed of the league's action concerning Ricky Davis and we will comply with all terms of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Beyond this statement, we will have no further comment on this matter."
