WASHINGTON -- Washington coach Flip Saunders will miss Wednesday night's game against Golden State to attend to "a family emergency involving his mother."
Assistant coach Randy Wittman will lead the team against the Warriors. He also served as head coach when Saunders missed a game for the same reason on Dec. 29 against Indiana.
"Trust me, I don't want to be standing here talking to you guys, but like I said before, family is first," Wittman said before the game.
Saunders also missed Tuesday's practice while traveling to the Cleveland area to be with his 90-year-old mother, Kay, and it isn't known whether he will return for Washington's next game Saturday against Minnesota.
"Our prayers are with Flip and his family in this trying time with his mother being ill," Wittman said. "Hopefully things will go well for him there."
Saunders is in his second season with the Wizards, who have lost six in a row and 15 of 17.
