76ers place F Derrick McKey on injured list

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers placed Derrick McKey on the injured list Monday, just over a month after the veteran forward came out of retirement.

McKey, who was signed by Philadelphia on January 15 after a three month retirement, is suffering from a muscle strain in his left calf.

The 35-year-old McKey is averaging 1.7 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15 games during his second stint under coach Larry Brown, whom he played for from 1993-97 as a member of the Indiana Pacers.

McKey was waived by the Pacers following training camp in October.

McKey's absence is another blow to the injury-ravaged 76ers. All-Star guard Allen Iverson is nursing a sprained toe and forwards Derrick Coleman and Corie Blount were suspended by the league Monday for their part in an altercation during Sunday's loss to the Pacers.

Philadelphia activated Jabari Smith from the injured list to fill McKey's spot on the roster. Smith originally was placed on the injured list with left knee tendinitis when McKey was signed.

Smith averaged just 1.4 points and 5.4 minutes in five games prior to his stint on the injured list. He scored a career-high 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench in Monday's 110-83 rout over the Denver Nuggets.
