Thursday, April 18 Updated: April 18, 10:11 PM ET Red-hot Raptors won't have Carter for playoffs ESPN.com news services The Toronto Raptors have played extremely well with Vince Carter out of the lineup. It looks as though they will have to continue to play without their best player.
Carter will not make the team's postseason roster, the Toronto Sun reported on Thursday. "The doctors advised me that he's not going to be able to play," Toronto general manager Glen Grunwald told the newspaper. "We'll have a meeting now, but it's 99 percent certain. "It's not a surprise (but) a bit of a disappointment. We'd like to have him out there but we've dealt with that now for a while and we'll continue to deal with it." With Carter out with a knee injury, the Raptors have gone 12-2. They clinched a playoff berth on the last day of the season, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-85 on Wednesday night. Carter underwent arthroscopic surgery on March 26, and said recently that he was not optimistic that he could return for the playoffs. The playoff roster has to be submitted to the NBA by Thursday afternoon, Grunwald said. He told the newspaper that only in extreme cases can a player not initially submitted be added for the playoffs at a later date. When Carter shut it down, it looked like the Raptors had no chance of making the playoffs, but they went on an amazing run to finish the season. Carter played in 60 games for the Raptors this season, averaging a team-high 24.7 points per game. "It was looking very bleak," Grunwald told the newspaper. "To turn around like that, I think it's unprecedented in sports. For us to do it in the second half of the year after the all-star break is truly unbelievable. "Hopefully it bodes well for our future and gives our guys confidence in themselves and their teammates," he said. "And when Vince comes back he'll be better than ever and I think we'll be that much better." |
