Spurs center David Robinson, who has played only seven minutes since injuring his back April 12, will not play in tonight's Game 2, the team announced.

A piece of a disc in his lower back has broken off and irritates a nerve, which prevents his right leg from fully functioning. He has also recently had numbness in his foot.

"It's getting a little bit better," Robinson told the San Antonio Express recently. "I guess the doctors were worried about me flipping my ankle over and tearing it up. But it's starting to get stronger. They said it could come back just as fast as it went."

Even if Robinson improves enough to play in the series, he still could face offseason surgery, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

"It could heal in a day; it could heal in a month," Popovich said. "He might need to get the piece taken out in the summer."

Robinson said he believes the broken disc cartilage was pre-existing.

"When they looked at the MRIs, they said it doesn't look new," Robinson said. "I've probably had it for a while. I haven't had any pain with it lately, so I don't think it's a problem.

"I feel better every day, but with this how close do you really know you are?"
