| | | Grant Hill would be Comeback Player of the Year material. |
The NBA has all sorts of comeback kids this season with Grant Hill, Jamal Mashburn and Theo Ratliff all bouncing back from injuries in 2001-02. That's why it would've been perfect for the NBA to bring back the Comeback of the Year award. ESPN.com's Marc Stein casts his vote for its return in his weekly NBA report.Chat wrap: Senior NBA writer Marc SteinKings' royal pain | Memphis' Lowe point

Just as it's safe to assume Jerry West is probably the only general manager on Earth who could sell Hubie Brown to the public as the logical coach for the Memphis Grizzlies, it appears the 69-year-old was the only veteran/teacher out there who could give West what he needs: Heavy-handed instruction without a care about wins and losses. No one else West would eye (such as Mike Dunleavy) would be keen to sign up for 60-plus Ls, which is where Memphis figures to languish for at least another season. Brown is expected to coach only two seasons, or right up to the point that West has salary-cap room to shake up the roster. That's when he'll undoubtedly bring in a Dunleavy (who might not be unemployed two years from now) or a Jeff Van Gundy (who's still not totally free of Knicks obligations to pursue jobs). Or maybe a Kelvin Sampson? Why not? West is a fan of the Oklahoma coach, who spent the summer in an NBA environment as a Team USA assistant at the World Championships. Whoever it is, the Grizz should be considerably more attractive entering the 2004 summer, and not only because of the cap room. If Memphis doesn't win the '03 draft lottery in May, remember, it must convey any pick lower than No. 1 to Detroit as part of Stu Jackson's long-ago Otis Thorpe trade. Which is why in-house improvement, in the short term, is so important to West. Click for more on Brian Grant's shooting struggles, the NBA's zoned-out teams and those unbeaten Dallas Mavericks.

| SPEAK OF THE WEEK |
"It's all just preparation for game No. 83."
—Dallas assistant coach Rolando Blackman, still Mr. Intensity in Mavsland, leading the in-house effort to temper enthusiasm over the Mavericks' 10-0 start.

SLAMS AND DUNKS
We figured that going home wouldn't exactly transform Vin Baker into a Celtics savior. Surprise, surprise: It hasn't. If there's a homecoming surprise, it's Andre Miller's so-so start with the Clippers ... More Slams and Dunks
WHAT A SCOUT SAYS
About Philadelphia's Keith Van Horn: "When he's scoring, they're a different team, but he's been up and down from what I've seen. He likes to step in and take walk-up 3s -- he trails the play and they kick the ball out to him and he takes the pressure off Iverson. They run some things for (Van Horn) to pop him open for shots. He doesn't move well laterally, but he's big enough to grab rebounds at the four position."
STAT OF THE WEEK
Lampoon the Nuggets if you wish, after seeing them literally scrape to score 53 points Saturday against the Pistons. Us? We'd rather celebrate Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe, who had 51 points himself in the famous triple-OT epic vs. Detroit almost 20 years ago. It happened on Dec. 13, 1983, a couple months before David Stern was voted in as NBA czar. Times have indeed changed. Right, Commish?
STAT OF THE WEAK
Celtics coach Jim O'Brien sagely noted last week that there isn't a single back-to-basket player in the NBA's top 20 scoring leaders. Not sure we're buying it the way O'Brien intended it -- as a defense for Vin Baker's near-invisible start in Boston (6.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg) -- but it's interesting research nonetheless. Shaquille O'Neal is the only injured stud who will undoubtedly rectify things when he returns.
MAILBAG
How much better off do you think the Knicks would be if they never traded for Antonio McDyess and kept Nene Hilario? It's easy to second-guess now, but I feel more entitled having written on draft night that the Knicks were bound to regret the McDyess-Hilario swap ... More Mailbag responses
