LeBron James
With proper advice, LeBron will follow the right path.

LeBron James is about to join their club. So what advice would current prep-to-pros stars give the Ohio high school phenom? Knowing what they know now, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady say James should do the right things and keep his family close, writes Marc Stein in his weekly report.

The solution in Orlando is obvious. Miss the playoffs, then win the lottery. That's about what it has to come to for the Magic. Landing LeBron James, to keep him or trade the pick for the size it so badly needs, is probably the only way Orlando can recoup a measure of what it has lost since the summer of 1996. Shaquille O'Neal bolted for L.A. in a huff. Tim Duncan thought about signing on to replace Shaq, then passed. Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill signed on to fill the void, only for Hill's left ankle to get progressively worse no matter what the doctors try. ... If you're itching to jump to conclusions about the Kings and Mavericks from the first of their four regular-season meetings, jump here: The biggest difference between the teams, besides Sacramento's two inside scoring options to Dallas' zero, is that the Kings' best defenders are flat-out good players. The Mavericks can't make the same claim. Just as Dallas doesn't have a Chris Webber or Vlade Divac to run its offense through, Dallas also doesn't have a Doug Christie. ... Click for more on what Shaq thinks of the Mavericks, why Hakeem won't tutor Yao, why teams should still fear the slumping Hornets and what the NBA's real travesty.

All Franchise did, listed generously at 6-foot-3, is overshadow 15 feet worth of Yao vs. Shaq with 44 points Friday night.

    E-MAIL OF THE WEEK
Yao MingSince when is 10 points and 10 rebounds in an overtime game a great performance? For Yao Ming, I would call that a marginal performance at best.

STEIN: You left out Yao's six blocks, and that Shaq didn't dunk over Yao until overtime. Shaq's limited mobility certainly helped, but he had only 13 points through three quarters also because Yao consistently denied deep position. Kobe Bryant and Rick Fox claimed afterward that Shaq only needed a quarter to figure Yao out. Truth is, Shaq didn't solve the riddle until his two late buckets in regulation and two dunks in OT.
