PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers expect guard Brandon Roy to be ready for training camp on Friday.
Roy, who has had trouble with both of his knees, met with team executives on Monday to discuss his future. He told them he felt great and wanted to help the team in any way he could.
There have been reports that the Blazers planned to use an amnesty clause in the league's new labor agreement to waive Roy, a three-time All-Star.
"Our plan is that Brandon (Roy) will be a part of this team going forward," Blazers President Larry Miller said.
Roy has a maximum-salary contract that keeps him with the Trail Blazers until at least the 2013-14 season, but his knees have been a concern.
He has said he lacks cartilage in both knees, meaning there is no cushion between the bones. After arthroscopic surgery last January, Roy came back to play, his minutes were limited off the bench, and he finished with an average of 12.2 points, a career low, in 47 games.
Coach Nate McMillan went so far as to say the he would look at starting Roy.
"Brandon is feeling better, so Brandon back at the two position is something that I'm leaning toward and making our adjustments from that," he said.
The team is waiting to see what happens with often-injured center Greg Oden, who is coming off microfracture on his left knee.
Portland offered the former No. 1 draft pick an $8.8 million qualifying offer to stay in Portland back on June 29. That means the 7-foot center is a restricted free agent. Oden can accept the offer, or see if any other teams are interested. The Blazers can match any offers that other teams make for him.
The 23-year-old Oden didn't play last season because of the microfracture surgery, his second. He missed his rookie season in 2007-08 after microfracture surgery on his right knee. Two seasons ago he broke his left kneecap.
Because of his injuries, the former Ohio State star has played in only 82 games over parts of two seasons, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.
Oden is scheduled to see a doctor in Colorado on Thursday for evaluation. It is not expected that he will be able to practice right away.
Acting general manager Chad Buchanan says he sees Oden in the Blazers' future.
"We've shown a lot of commitment to Greg both on and off the court and I think Greg feels like he has some unfinished business here," Buchanan said.
Earlier Monday, forward LaMarcus Aldridge worked out at the Blazers' practice facility.
