Stanford sophomore Logan Tom will be the only collegian on the 12-member 2000 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, which was announced on Aug. 15.
Stanford is one of three colleges that placed two players on the 12-member U.S. Olympic roster. In addition to Tom, Kerri Walsh, who last season became just the fifth Pac-10 player to earn first-team AVCA All-America honors four consecutive seasons, also is on the team. Long Beach State will be represented by middle blocker Danielle Scott and outside hitter Tara Cross Battle. Benishe Dillard, who was a middle blocker for the 49ers, made the Olympic team as one of two alternates. Hawaii alumni Heather Brown and Robyn Ah Mow also will be in Sydney.
The U.S. Olympic team is grouped with Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia and Kenya in Pool A. The Americans are ranked 10th in the world. Russia and Cuba, ranked first and second, respectively, are in Pool B. The U.S. team makes its Olympic debut Sept. 16 against fourth-ranked China. The Americans will then play every two days, facing No. 29 Kenya on Sept. 18, No. 8 Croatia on Sept. 20, No. 27 Australia on Sept. 22 and third-ranked Brazil on Sept. 24. The top four teams from each pool advance to the quarterfinals.
