Defending champ North Dakota gets at-large bid

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS – Michigan State received the top seed in the West and Boston College was seeded No. 1 in the East on Sunday for the 12-team men's NCAA Division I Hockey Championship.

Defending champion North Dakota and St. Cloud State, which beat the Fighting Sioux 6-5 in overtime Saturday in the Western College Hockey Association Championship, also received first-round byes.

North Dakota and Boston College, last year's runner-up, were paired in the East Regional at Worcester, Mass., and could meet in a rematch in the title game April 7 at Albany, N.Y.

First-round West Regional games Saturday at Grand Rapids, Mich., match No. 3 seed Michigan against Mercyhurst and fourth-seeded Wisconsin against Providence.

The Frozen Four semifinals will be played April 5 at Pepsi Arena in Albany.

St. Cloud State heads to the tournament fresh off Saturday's 6-5 overtime win over North Dakota at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The win gave the Huskies (31-8-1) their first WCHA championship after 11 years in the league.

"There will never be another first championship in school history, so these guys will be remembered for accomplishing something very special," said Huskies coach Craig Dahl.

North Dakota (27-7-9) – the defending national champion – won the McNaughton Cup, which goes to the regular-season champion.

Colorado College (26-12-1) is 7-7 in its last 14 games, including two wins in three games played in less than 48 hours. The Tigers took third place in the WCHA's Final Five.

"This was good for us to learn how to deal with adversity and tiredness," said Tigers' coach Scott Owens.

Minnesota, meanwhile, limps into the NCAA Tournament after the Final Five loss to Colorado College. The Golden Gophers (27-12-2) also lost in the tournament's semifinal round and have lost five of their last eight games.

"Everyone's 0-0 going to the tournament," reasoned Minnesota captain Erik Westrum, who scored two goals in Saturday's loss to Colorado College. "We're looking forward to making a run at it."

The Golden Gophers are making their 25th trip to the national tournament.
