Pat Noonan's 14th goal helped No. 4 Indiana beat Rutgers 3-0 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Phil Presser made it 1-0 after 32 minutes with a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net in Bloomington, Ind.
Noonan scored less than two minutes into the second half, and sophomore Vijay Dias got the final goal 10 minutes later. Dias made a long run from the midfield and slipped behind the Scarlet Knights' defense for an easy goal.
The Hoosiers hit the crossbar twice but still scored their most goals since a 6-0 victory over Indiana-Purdue of Indianapolis on Nov. 4.
The Hoosiers (16-3-1) next face Clemson, which beat Alabama-Birmingham 3-2 in double overtime Sunday. Rutgers is 15-7-3. Rounding out the quarterfinals: Southern Methodist (21-0-0) faces St. John's, N.Y. (16-2-3), Stanford (18-1-1) takes on Saint Louis (18-1-0) and North Carolina (18-4-0) plays Fairleigh Dickinson (17-6-0). Fairleigh Dickinson won on the road in South Orange, N.J., when Taffarie Laing scored, and goalkeeper Vytautas Lenkutis had his eighth shutout in a 1-0 victory over Seton Hall.
The victory was FDU's 10th in a row and 14th in 15 games. Seton Hall finished 12-7-2.
Eight minutes after halftime, Laing took a return heel pass from Aaron Paye, then sent a 15-foot shot that Seton Hall goalie Efren Aguirre got a hand on but couldn't stop. It was Laing's second goal of the season and the third of his collegiate career.
The Pirates outshot FDU 25-13. North Carolina advanced with a 1-0 overtime victory at home in Chapel Hill when Mike Gell atoned for a missed penalty kick by scoring in overtime to beat American and earn a second consecutive trip to the quarterfinals.
David Testo assisted on the winning score, 4:12 into overtime.
The goal "meant a lot to me, but it meant a lot more to the team," Gell said. "We wanted to win this one for our seniors. We didn't want to go out at home. I missed on a couple of opportunities earlier in the game and wanted to redeem myself."
American goalie Michael Behonick stopped Gell's penalty kick with 20 minutes left in regulation.
Gell also just missed two shots in the first half from close range. The first shot was knocked away by a defender, and his second shot was saved by Behonick.
Behonick finished with nine saves as UNC outshot the Eagles 16-5.
UNC goalie Michael Ueltschey had two saves. The shutout was the school-record 13th of the season for North Carolina. American finishes at 13-8-2. |
