ALBANY, N.Y. -- Iowa State's Cael Sanderson won two matches Friday in the NCAA wrestling tournament Friday, extending his unbeaten streak to 158 matches heading into the championship. Minnesota expanded its lead over Oklahoma in team standings, advancing three wrestlers to title matches. Two Sooners will go to the finals, and three top seeds were upset Friday.
The 197-pound Sanderson posted a 18-7 major decision over Ohio State's Nick Preston. Preston went after Sanderson aggressively, but Sanderson was too quick and strong, scoring repeated takedowns.
Earlier, Sanderson had a 23-8 technical fall over Jason Payne of Northern Iowa.
Sanderson is widely expected to take the NCAA title Saturday for the fourth straight year, the first to do that without a single loss on his record. Only Lehigh sophomore Jon Trenge, the second seed at 197 pounds, stands in the way.
Trenge, who lost 6-1 in Sanderson's closest match this year, threw and pinned Nebraska's Justin Ruiz on Friday in 1:20 and scored a major decision 16-6 over Minnesota's Owen Elzen, twice picking him up and driving him into the mat and once scoring a near fall.
"He's a stud," Sanderson said. "He's going to be a tough opponent."
Trenge said he plans to wrestle better against Sanderson than last time and leave nothing behind. "The kid's a phenomenon," Trenge said. "But I'm up for it."
Minnesota led with 112 points after Friday's semifinals and wrestlebacks, followed by Oklahoma with 95 points. Iowa State, Iowa and Oklahoma State followed. At 149 pounds, Ohio's Jake Percival, a redshirt freshman and the eighth seed, won an 18-4 major decision over Iowa's Mike Zadick, the top seed and one of eight wrestlers who had come to the tournament unbeaten this season. But Oklahoma's Jared Frayer decisioned Percival 11-6 in the semifinals.
For the championship, Frayer faces Minnesota's Jared Lawrence, a 5-4 tiebreaker winner over Lock Haven's JaMarr Billman with a last-second escape in a bout that was protested.
Two other top-seeded wrestlers lost.
Princeton's Greg Parker decisioned Michigan senior Otto Olson 12-8, using his legs to ride him and scoring a late escape and takedown in the seesaw match. The win by the Albany-area native brought a roar from the crowd.
Navy's Mark Conley, ranked first at 141 pounds, lost 4-3 to Iowa State's Aaron Holker, who scored a reverse just as time ran out.
At 125 pounds, Fresno State senior Stephen Abas, a returning champion, outpointed Oregon's Shawn Williams 8-4 and beat Purdue's Chris Fleeger 14-5.
At 133 pounds, Minnesota's top-seeded Ryan Lewis beat Iowa State's Zach Roberson 9-5, then pinned Wisconsin's Kevin Black in 4:51.
At 157 pounds, Nebraska senior Bryan Snyder was ahead on points when he pinned Michigan State's Gray Maynard in 5:07. He ran his unbeaten season to 33-0 with a 5-2 decision over Shane Roller of Oklahoma State in the semifinals.
At 165 pounds, Iowa State senior Joe Heskett won a major decision over Oklahoma's Robbie Waller 10-2, then pinned unseeded Mark Fee of Appalachian State in 5:24.
At 184, second-seeded Damion Hahn of Minnesota edged Cornell's Clint Wattenberg 3-2, then fell in an 8-6 decision to Oklahoma's Josh Lambrecht.
Among the heavyweights (up to 285 pounds), Ohio State sophomore Tommy Rowlands outpointed Northern Iowa's Paul Hynek 4-1 and Minnesota's Garret Lowney 7-5. Second-seeded freshman Steve Mocco of Iowa beat Arizona State's Kellan Fluckiger 5-1 and Purdue's Jake Vercelli 9-1. |
