BALTIMORE -- Kyle Barrie and Bobby Benson both scored four goals as Johns Hopkins blew away defending champion Syracuse 19-8 Saturday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I lacrosse tournament.
Conor Ford had three goals for the Blue Jays (14-1), who avenged their lone loss of the season and advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1989.
Hopkins trailed 7-5 late in the first half before going on a staggering 14-0 run that sent the Orangemen to their most lopsided loss in an NCAA tournament game. "Our offense came alive in the second half and we finally started to play defense the way we've taught them all year," Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala said. The game was played before a record crowd of 37,823 on a soggy field at M&T Stadium, just a few miles from the Johns Hopkins campus. "The conditions didn't help our style of play,'' Syracuse attacker Mike Powell said. "But a lot of it was just us. They showed more heart than we did.'' Powell, who came in with 31 goals and 31 assists, was limited to a pair of assists, both in the opening eight minutes.
It's the first time in five years the Orangemen failed to advance to the championship round. Instead, Syracuse (10-6) finished with more defeats than in any season since 1977. Syracuse ran the length of the field to score with just 28 seconds elapsed, two crisp passes by Mike Powell provided goals for a 3-0 lead. Down 4-1 after the first quarter, Hopkins scored twice in a 14-second span and closed to 7-6 at halftime.
The Blue Jays did not lead until Ford scored with 5:51 left in the third period to make it 8-7. Benson then gave Hopkins a two-goal lead, and Barrie converted an on-the-run pass from Joe McDermott for a 10-7 advantage. When the teams played in March, Syracuse trailed 8-2 before rallying for a 15-14 victory. This time, the Orangemen asserted themselves at the outset and collapsed after halftime.
Cavaliers cruise past ACC rival Maryland Freshman Matt Ward scored four goals for the Cavaliers (14-2), who set a tournament record by allowing only four goals in a semifinal game. The record was five. Virginia's two losses this season came against Maryland and Hopkins, in succession in late March by 8-7 scores. The Cavaliers have since won nine straight. Like Syracuse, Virginia established control early. Unlike the Orangemen, the Cavaliers increased the margin against Maryland (12-4). After Ward scored twice to help Virginia take a 5-2 halftime lead, he added two goals during a third period in which the Cavaliers outscored the Terrapins 6-1 to go up 11-3.
