Titans pitching handcuffs red-hot Sun Devils

Associated Press

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Jason Windsor and Chad Cordero combined on a five-hitter to lead host Cal State Fullerton to a 5-1 victory over Arizona State in the first game of their NCAA Super Regional on Friday at Goodwin Field.

Jason Corapci
ASU and Dustin Pedroia need to win Saturday to stay alive in the race for Omaha.
The Titans (47-13) need one more victory in the best-of-three series to secure a berth in the College World Series.

The Sun Devils (53-13) entered the game leading the NCAA with a .352 team batting average and an average of 10.35 runs per game.

But Windsor (10-2), a junior walk-on, scattered five hits, allowing one earned run and one walk in seven innings while striking out five. Cordero added two strikeouts in two innings and didn't allow a hit.

Fullerton jumped on freshman left-hander Erik Averill (8-2) in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits, a hit batter and a balk. Ronnie Prettyman drove in two with a triple and Jason Corapci and Shane Costa had run-scoring singles.

The Titans scored again in the seventh when, with runners in scoring position, Arizona State first baseman Jeff Larish made a diving one-handed catch on Kurt Suzuki's pop foul and Corapci tagged up and scored from third.

Arizona State got its only run in the top of the fifth when Tuffy Gosewisch singled Nick Walsh home.

Arizona State's Jeremy West and Andre Ethier extended their hitting streaks to 22 and 21 games, respectively.
