SAN DIEGO -- Mike Bohn, athletic director at Idaho for more than five years, will take over the athletic department at San Diego State as the school works to overcome criticism for lax oversight and mismanagement, officials announced Monday.
Bohn replaces Rick Bay, who resigned in May after a California State University auditor issued a report critical of the department. Bohn is a former associate athletic director at Colorado State and worked as an assistant athletic director at the Air Force Academy.
Bohn, 42, said he would work hard to address problems raised by the state audit when he begins his new job Oct. 17.
"We'll have three fundamental principles: don't cheat, don't overspend, and work hard," he told a news conference in San Diego. "When the entire team follows these basic rules, it leads to success on and off the field."
Bohn agreed to a five-year contract that will pay him $178,000 a year. He earned roughly $150,000 a year at Idaho.
During Bohn's tenure at Idaho, he hired football coach Tom Cable, men's basketball coach Leonard Perry, women's basketball coach Mike Divilbiss and volleyball coach Debbie Buchanan.
Bay, the Aztecs' athletic director since 1995, resigned on May 22 in the wake of the CSU audit. The university fired senior associate athletic director Jana Doggett and placed equipment room manager Steve Bartel on leave pending disciplinary action.
According to the audit, an 11-month investigation revealed that admissions rules were bent; athletic department clothing and equipment were taken for personal use by employees; and there was an overall lack of oversight of equipment purchases, inventory and bartering.
Information from the audit obtained by The San Diego Union-Tribune indicated there was a culture within the equipment room that promoted underage drinking and trips to strip clubs while on football road trips. During one 2001 trip to Columbus, Ohio, the school's equipment manager and two student assistants were photographed with a topless dancer at a strip club.
Bay had two years left on a contract that paid him $162,097 annually from the state, plus another $70,000 from private sources.
Gene Bartow, a former UCLA basketball coach and AD at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, was named interim athletic director for the Aztecs in July. |
