Oklahoma City, Okla. -- A perfect 4-0 season debut keeps the defending national champion UCLA Bruins at No. 1 in the first ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll for 2004. Next week the Bruins will have an opportunity showcase their No. 1 ranking at the UNLV Classic where they will battle No. 9 Nebraska and No. 13 DePaul. California lands at No. 2 after the first week of play with a strong 4-0 outing, followed by the always competitive Arizona Wildcats at No. 3 and Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma at No. 4. No.7 Georgia jumped three sports from No. 10 with a solid 5-0 opening weekend that included a win over then-No. 13 Oregon. The Ducks dropped from No. 13 to No. 20, while South Carolina entered the poll at No. 25. The Lady Vols of Tennessee saw this week's biggest jump from No. 25 to No. 18 thanks to USA Softball Player of the Week Monica Abbott. The freshman pitcher tallied a 6-0 record and recorded a perfect game and a no hitter en route to UT's Paradise Classic title. The ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches representing 15 different ASA regions and 12 different collegiate conferences. The poll is also voted on by selected softball media members. First-place votes are in parentheses.
