BOX SCORE
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Maurice Evans got lost in his game Wednesday night, something Texas coach Rick Barnes was glad to see. Evans scored 21 points and Texas went on a 26-7 run late to defeat Texas A&M 76-58 in a foul-plagued game. "I thought Maurice Evans played his best game since he's been at Texas," Barnes said. "I talk to the players a lot about getting lost in the game. I thought he did that tonight. He played a great game tonight all around." Texas (14-3, 3-1 Big 12) trailed 34-28 at the half, but came out strong, closing the margin to a single point before A&M' s Andy Leatherman drained a 3-pointer and drew the foul. Evans and Brandon Mouton scored back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Longhorns their first lead in more than 10 minutes of play at 43-41. Bernard King, who led the Aggies with 23 points, gave A&M (6-10, 0-4) the lead again with his own 3-pointer. Evans turned the reins over to Chris Owens down the stretch as the Longhorns turned inside and exploited A&M's weakness inside. "Our whole halftime meeting was directed at Chris Owens and he really responded," Barnes said. All 15 of Owens' points came during the second period as Texas switched gears from the perimeter where A&M's defense was at its best, to the paint where they exploited the weakness to run away with the game during the final minutes. "Once we had it going a little bit it just snowballed from there," Evans said. The Longhorns, playing in their third game in six days, showed little signs of fatigue after Monday's upset of No. 15 Connecticut. The win marked Texas' first conference win on the road after losing to Nebraska 80-67 on Jan. 13. "We're really trying to get this thing turned around where we can be just as consistent on the road as we were at home," Evans said. A total of 49 fouls were called in the game. King was the Aggies' only offense in the first seven minutes of play, scoring eight points as Texas built up a 17-8 margin. A trio of turnovers by the Longhorns allowed A&M to go on an 11-3 run midway through the period, closing the lead to 22-21. Darren Kelly added 11 points and Roosevelt Brown scored 10 to close out the scoring for the Longhorns. |
