Texas coach wants to see some improvement

RECAP | BOX SCORE

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Never let it be said that Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes isn't demanding.

"I'm upset because of the way we played," Barnes said Saturday, after the Longhorns (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today) pulled out a 73-66 overtime victory against Baylor. "I think it's really important for our players to understand that we have to get better."

Chris Owens had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Texas (15-3, 4-1 Big 12), which led by as many as 10 points in the second half. They led 56-51 with 2:20 left in regulation.

Even though Darren Kelly managed 19 points for the Longhorns and Maurice Evans scored 18, Barnes said he was upset that his three leading scorers shot a combined 11-for-42 from the field.

"Those three are the guys we need to go to," said Barnes. "They have to have the responsibility and pressure of knowing the other team's defense is set up to stop them."

Baylor (13-3, 2-3) took a 58-56 lead with 1:27 remaining with a jump shot by DeMarcus Minor.

Wendell Greenleaf added a layup off a steal and Minor added a three-point play, but Texas' Maurice Evans tied the game at 58 with a shot from the baseline.

Texas went on a 9-2 run in overtime and led 69-62 with 1:46 left.

Minor led Baylor with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Greg Evans scored 16, Terry Black had 14 and Greenleaf added 11.

"We probably had our best chance to win today when we made that steal at the end of the second half," said Baylor coach Dave Bliss. "But their players made the plays down the stretch and that's why they are who they are."
