Cowboys cruise over No. 14 Sooners

RECAP | BOX SCORE

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma State used an Eddie Sutton staple – great defense – to dismantle Oklahoma.

Selvy goes down
Oklahoma forward Daryan Selvy spent six minutes on the floor writhing in pain late in the Sooners' 72-44 loss to Oklahoma State.

Selvy went down near midcourt with 2:28 remaining and stayed down while being attended to by trainers. He eventually was helped off the court.

The school's basketball publicist, Mike Houck, said it was believed Selvy suffered a severe stomach cramp.

"Part of my brain is with him right now," coach Kelvin Sampson said during his postgame news conference. "I don't think he went into shock, but boy it was close."

Sampson said Selvy would be taken to a hospital for further tests.

The Cowboys held Oklahoma (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) to 34 percent shooting Wednesday night in a 72-44 victory that ended the Sooners' seven-game winning streak.

It was Oklahoma's lowest point total since a 53-43 loss to Nebraska in 1998. The Sooners (19-5, 8-4 Big 12) lost by their widest margin in the series since a 33-point loss in 1964.

"I don't think we've played any better defense in several years than we played tonight," Sutton said. "We played certainly the best game we've played all season. That was probably about as well as we could play."

Victor Williams scored a career-high 26 points and was equally impressive on defense as Oklahoma State (15-6, 6-4) ended a two-game losing streak.

Williams, the smallest player on the floor at 5-foot-10, scored 18 in the first half, matching the Sooners' total. He also hounded J.R. Raymond all night. Raymond, who had averaged 20 points during Oklahoma's winning streak, finished with just seven.

"They played like a team that desperately needed to win," Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson said. "It's the best I've seen a team play against us this year."

The Sooners had won the past two meetings in Stillwater and four straight road games during their winning streak, but they never got on track this time.

Oklahoma State outrebounded the Sooners 32-22 and held them to a season-low two 3-pointers. Oklahoma came in averaging seven 3-pointers per game.

It was the Cowboys' most impressive performance since two players and 10 members of the OSU delegation died in a plane crash in Colorado last month.

Aaron McGhee
Believe it or not, Oklahoma's Aaron McGhee (13) scored two points on this play.
Williams' point total eclipsed the 25 he scored as a freshman two years ago at Illinois State. He sat out last season after transferring.

Fredrik Jonzen had 15 points and Maurice Baker scored 13. Nolan Johnson was the only Sooner in double figures (12).

"I thought our offense was bad and I thought their defense was great," Sampson said. "There was not one phase that Oklahoma State was not good at."

Williams scored on a drive to the basket, then hit back-to-back 3-pointers as Oklahoma State took a 10-2 lead. After Oklahoma pulled within 10-7 a few minutes later, the Cowboys put together a 12-2 run to take control. Williams capped the spurt with his third 3-pointer.

"My first shot kind of felt good today," said Williams, who came in averaging 11 points per game. "The basket just kept getting bigger and bigger for me and I just kept knocking them down."

Oklahoma went without a basket for more than five minutes later in the half, allowing the Cowboys to take their biggest first-half lead, 32-13.

The Sooners shot just 35 percent in their lowest-scoring half of the season. Their backcourt trio of Raymond, Johnson and Hollis Price managed just two points each.

The second half wasn't much better. Oklahoma cut the deficit to 16 by scoring the first basket, but Baker had nine of his points in an 11-4 run that ended any doubt about the outcome. The Cowboys led by as many as 31 at one point.

Oklahoma State's 57 percent shooting was the best against Oklahoma this season.

"I really don't know what happened," said forward Andre Williams. "We just jumped on them from the start and kept them down the whole game. It was just unreal."
