Red Storm snap two-game losing streak

RECAP | BOX SCORE

NEW YORK (AP) – Willie Shaw redeemed himself with his shooting. Sharif Fordham impressed everyone with his rebounding.

WOLFINGER SUSPENDED
Jack Wolfinger, a St. John's redshirt freshman, was suspended for Wednesday's game, according to a report in the New York Times . Wolfinger did not attend the game at Madison Square Garden, and his status with the team remains unclear.

St. John's Coach Mike Jarvis said he would make an announcement on Wolfinger on Thursday. Jarvis elected not to play Wolfinger in Sunday's game against Duke because of what the coach called "conduct that was detrimental to St. John's," the report said.

Jarvis runs his team on a merit system with players earning playing time, and has not said what Wolfinger did to elicit the benching.

Shaw, the freshman guard who went scoreless against Duke three days earlier, bounced back with 16 points Wednesday night and St. John's beat Georgetown (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) 73-70.

Fordham, a junior college transfer, had career highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Red Storm, who snapped a two-game losing streak and had lost four of five and five of seven.

Shaw missed all eight of his shots, including five 3-pointers, in the 91-59 loss to Duke, the Red Storm's worst defeat at Madison Square Garden in 41 years. But against the Hoyas, he hit his first three 3-point attempts and the last of his four 3s came with 1:32 to play and gave the Red Storm (14-11, 8-5 Big East) a 71-65 lead.

"We got some pretty good bounces and a lot of big-time rebounds from (Fordham) and a big, big 3-point shot at the end of the game from Willie," St. John's coach Mike Jarvis said. "I was telling them that there are not many people that can be knocked out one day – and I mean knocked out – and get up off the canvas and come back a few days later in the same arena and just gut it out."

Anthony Perry hit a 3-pointer 13 seconds after Shaw's 3 for Georgetown (20-6, 7-6). Kevin Braswell's steal and layup with 1:07 left brought the Hoyas within 71-70, but Omar Cook got the lead back to three with two free throws with 24 seconds left.

Georgetown's final chance at a tie was a 3-point attempt by Braswell with 5 seconds left, but it bounced off the rim and Fordham, appropriately enough, grabbed the rebound.

"The big guys helped me out with the rebounds by boxing out and I just cleared the boards for them," said Fordham, who had his first career double-double in the loss to Duke with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Shaw's late 3-pointer was one of just two field goals during the final nine minutes for the Red Storm.

"The first shot got my confidence up," Shaw said. "I shot 100 jumpers every day this week, so that really helped. I had to go back to the hard work that made me a good 3-point shooter."

Georgetown, which trailed by 11 early in the second half and was down 65-58 with 9:18 to play, couldn't sustain any offense throughout the game and could only slowly chip away at the lead.

"I knew they would bounce back," Georgetown coach Craig Esherick said. "I knew this game was not going to be easy, playing them on their home floor. I thought St. John's played well and I thought we played well although I am upset we had that many turnovers (21), there were some things we did well that we haven't done in a while, particularly Ruben. I thought Ruben played great."

Braswell had 19 points for the Hoyas, who have lost three of four, while Ruben Boumtje Boumtje had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

"With eight seconds left, we were just trying to get a shot off," Braswell said of the final chance at a tie. "Today just wasn't my day. We made some turnovers down the stretch, and that determined the game."
