Hinrich scores 15 of his 20 points in second half

RECAP | BOX SCORE

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Kansas guard Kirk Hinrich said he didn't think he played his best Sunday in the Jayhawks' win over Nebraska.

Kansas' Nick Collison and Nebraska's Kimani Ffriend fight for a rebound.
His statistics said otherwise.

Hinrich scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and tied career highs with 11 assists and seven rebounds as the Jayhawks (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) held off the Cornhuskers 78-74.

"I was just out there playing. I didn't feel like I played as well as I can. But I took some big shots and hit them," said Hinrich, who was 3-for-5 from 3-point range.

Nick Collison had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks (21-5, 10-4 Big 12). But his final point and the last three from Hinrich were the most crucial of the game.

With the Jayhawks up 74-71 with 19 seconds left, Collison drew a foul. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but the rebound went straight to Hinrich, who was fouled.

Hinrich also went 1-for-2, but Kansas was able to again come up with the rebound. Hinrich drew another foul and made both shots. "We did a real good job of hitting big shots when we needed them," Collison said. "We didn't play our best by any means, but when we can hit big shots like that and get an occasional stop it's pretty big."

Cookie Belcher led Nebraska (13-14, 6-8) with a career-high 29 points, going 7-for-11 from 3-point range. Cary Cochran added 14 points, Kimani Ffriend had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Steffon Bradford scored 12 for the Huskers, who nearly erased a 12-point deficit in the second half.

Ffriend hit a jumper in the lane that brought Nebraska within 74-70, then the Huskers didn't let the Jayhawks get the ball inside and forced Kenny Gregory to take a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. Gregory missed everything and Nebraska got the ball back with 54 seconds left, but Belcher went 1-for-2 from the line and Kansas got the last three rebounds of the game.

Kansas pulled away early in the second half as Nebraska was just 5-for-17 in the first eight minutes.

After a two-handed dunk by Ffriend brought Nebraska within 45-41, the Huskers had a chance to cut it to two points when Bradford made a steal and went in alone for a dunk that bounced off the back of the rim.

The Jayhawks turned around and made it a 12-point lead on a pair of free throws by Collison and Hinrich hit a 3-pointer and a short jumper for the 53-41 lead.
