BOX SCORE
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ Toot Young scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half as Chattanooga reached the Southern Conference tournament semifinals for the fourth time in five years with a 74-48 victory over defending champion Appalachian State on Friday night. The Mocs (16-12) will take on Georgia Southern, who came back from a 10-point deficit to defeat top-seeded East Tennessee. Davidson, which ousted tournament favorite College of Charleston, meets North Carolina Greensboro in Saturday's other semifinal. The champion, who'll get an automatic NCAA tournament berth, will be decided Sunday. Young's outside shooting _ he hit four 3-pointers _ helped Chattanooga build a 35-25 lead in the first half. When Appalachian State (11-20) cut things to 38-36 at the break, the Mocs started the second half with an 11-1 run that featured Young's fifth and final 3-pointer. Dusty Pullian had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Oliver Morton had 15 for Chattanooga. The Mountaineers may have won 20 games the past three years. But they are far from the same team that ran off this court with the Southern Conference tourney crown. Coach Buzz Peterson took the Tulsa job. Their leading scorer a year ago, Rufus Leach, died in a tragic drowning accident. Southern Conference tournament MVP Tyson Patterson graduated. Still, it was a big enough surprise for Appalachian State to get by Wofford in the first-round. The second half here was no contest. The Mountaineers scored only 12 points during the period. They had nine turnovers and just five baskets in that 20 minutes. Their leading scorer with nine points was Noah Brown, who made three 3-pointers early on and then missed the three other shots he took. Appalachian State scored just one basket the final 7:26. Chattanooga did about anything it wanted. Pullian was 8-of-8 from the field, while Young went 8 of 14 and Morton 6 of 12. Appalachian led 20-18 with 9:57 in the first half, then Chattanooga went on a 17-5 run as Toot Young and Dusty Pullian had five points each. Young's driving layup gave a Mocs a 35-25 lead. But the Mountaineers closed the half with an 11-3 run to make it 38-36.
