RECAP | BOX SCORE

CHICAGO (AP) _ Gyasi Cline-Heard grabbed teammate Brandon Watkins' air ball jumper and hit a reverse layup with three-tenths of a second left Thursday to give Penn State an 82-80 win over Michigan in the Big Ten tournament.

Penn State started to celebrate the first-round victory before officials kept the players on the floor as they watched a replay at the scorer's table.

After a couple of minutes, officials ruled the shot was good with three-tenths of a second left, which gave Michigan one last attempt.

But Bernard Robinson's floor-length heave sailed over the backboard at the other end and the ball went to the Nittany Lions, who inbounded it and ran out the clock.

Looking for their first NCAA tournament appearance since coach Jerry Dunn's first season in 1995-96, the Nittany Lions (18-10) now face a tough assignment Friday in the quarterfinals _ a date with second-ranked and defending national champion Michigan State.

Cline-Heard finished with a career-high 24 points after one of the biggest baskets of his career. Robinson scored a career-best 23 and LaVell Blanchard 22 to lead Michigan (10-18).

Penn State got a surprising lift from freshman Jamaal Tate, who came off the bench to hit four straight second-half 3-pointers as the Nittany Lions wiped out a five-point halftime deficit and took a 70-61 lead with just under 10 minutes left.

But Michigan, perhaps playing to save coach Brian Ellerbe's job, scrapped back with an 18-6 run, taking the lead on Chris Young's baseline jumper with 3:02 left.

Josh Asselin's two free throws pushed the lead to three.

Joe Crispin, Penn State's leading scorer who was held to nine points, had a pair of free throws to break a two-and-a-half minute scoring drought for the Nittany Lions. Then Titus Ivory hit a pair from the line to give the lead back to Penn State at 80-79 with 1:34 left.

Asselin hit one of two free throws to tie at 80 with 1:18 left.

After Joe Crispin and Tate missed shots at the other end for Penn State, Young rebounded for Michigan with 42 seconds to play.

But Robinson missed a long jumper, Blanchard rebounded and got the ball to Avery Queen, who lost the ball in the lane under defensive pressure from Tate. Penn State got the ball back with seven seconds left.

After two timeouts, Watkins took an inbounds pass and raced up the floor, but his jumper was way short and Cline-Heard was there to put it in.

Ivory added 19 points for the Nittany Lions.
