FORDHAM RAMS
 |
Anyone still here? Hello? Helloooooooo? Ah, there you are, Michael Haynes. Glad to have you back. Now can you please score about 30 points per game? That's probably what it will take for Fordham to have any kind of a season this year in the wake of the early departure of its best three players from a team that only went 8-20 last season. The aftermath isn't pretty. Gone is last season's starting backcourt, the especially skilled duo of Smush Parker (16.5 ppg) and Adrian Walton (9.7 ppg), both of whom had NBA aspirations. Gone also is leading inside force Jeff McMillan (10.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg), a transfer to Southern Cal. Also gone are three seniors who combined to average 25.9 points and 17.6 rebounds. Who's left? Well, Haynes (9.4 ppg), a 6-8 wing who'll have to lead the team in most categories. Massive center Glenn Batemon (2.5 ppg) also is back. So is junior guard Mark Jarrell-Wright (8.3 ppg).
TOUGH ENOUGH..............................
Batemon is an intriguing big man. At 6-11 and 360 pounds, he's also a really, really big big man. His first national exposure came at the adidas ABCD Camp as a high school junior when he shattered a backboard on a dunk. He has skills and touch for such a big man, but needs to work on conditioning. He played just 6.9 minutes per game last season, but he will get as many minutes as he can handle this season. Heaven help anyone who gets in his way.
TOUGH ENOUGH?..............................
The Rams have holes throughout their lineup, most notably the backcourt, where freshman Jermaine Anderson will try to plug the gap created by Parker's NBA defection. Anderson would have benefited greatly not only from a year in a backup role, but also a year of working in practice with Parker. Alas, it was not to be.
BOTTOM LINE..............................
The Rams lost 20 of 28 games last season. This season could be worse.
