At 6'6, J.R. is confident in his game and has the ability to run the point or mix it up on the inside. He is a great rebounding guard and has a knack for taking control of his team when needed. He averaged 25 points and 7.2 rebounds a game last year as a junior for John Marshall High School. Giddens can shoot from anywhere on the court and has a high release on his shot which makes it almost impossible to block. Coach Roy Williams said, "Basketball-wise, he has a big-time flare for the game; he is a runner, jumper and has great athleticism." Giddens is being compared to Kansas alumni Kenny Gregory because of his explosive play. Giddens is the No. 1 rated player in Oklahoma on the No. 1 rated team.
