ESPN.com Here is a guide to understanding how much value men's college basketball players in the top programs bring to their respective schools. As a tool to understanding that value, ESPN.com applied the NBA's revenue-sharing formula -- which gives 61 percent of the league's gross revenues to the players. So, in the categories below, you will see:
The revenue that each program generates.
The average "salary" each scholarship player would get under the NBA formula.
The maximum annual financial value of their scholarship.
The difference between their hypothetical "salary" and the value of their scholarship.
And finally, the amount of that difference over four years -- in other words, how much the average player is "underpaid" during his time at the school.
(Each school's revenues were reported in October 2000 to the U.S. Department of Education and obtained through the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act.)
