Police investigate Price allegation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis on Monday released two anonymous faxes in which it was alleged that former men's basketball coach Tic Price had an affair with a 23-year-old Memphis senior and assaulted her.

Police are investigating the allegation that a bleeding woman was seen leaving Price's Germantown home last month.

Price, 43, resigned unexpectedly Sunday and neither he nor university officials have said what prompted the move.

The faxes were sent anonymously to the school and released Monday as part of a Tennessee open-records request by the Commercial Appeal of Memphis.

The newspaper reported that the second fax, which the school received Friday, led the athletic department to reopen an investigation into the allegations. Two days later, Price quit.

A notation on the first fax indicates that Price had denied the affair and assault after the allegations were initially made Oct. 11.

After releasing the faxes, athletic director R.C. Johnson said, "I think all the answers will be there for everyone." Johnson declined additional comment, citing a confidentiality agreement with Price.

No charges have been filed against Price and none of the allegations has been substantiated, police say.

"We're looking into it because of the allegations made there," a police spokesman said.

The woman ran outside and stood by the curb for about five minutes before going back inside the home, according to the fax, which said the woman had been having an affair with Price for more than a year.
