Donewald's 11-year run ends with 151-155 record

Associated Press

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Bob Donewald was fired Monday as men's basketball coach at Western Michigan.

The Broncos finished the season 10-18 after losing 77-52 to Ohio last Wednesday in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Donewald will be reassigned within the athletic department as a special assistant to athletic director Kathy Beauregard. A search for Donewald's successor will begin immediately, the university said.

"We appreciate Bob's many years of loyal service to this institution, but felt it was time for a change in the leadership of the men's basketball program," Beauregard said in a written statement. "The university remains committed to fulfilling the terms of coach Donewald's contract."

In 11 years at Western, Donewald was 151-155. He has a record of 359-276 in 22 years as a head coach.

Two of his teams at Western had 21-win seasons, including in 1997-1998, when the Broncos qualified for the NCAA tournament and defeated Clemson in the first round. Following that season, the university signed Donewald to a five-year extension.

Donewald led Illinois State to six NCAA and NIT tournament appearances in 11 seasons, before being fired in 1989.
