Corey Maggette misled Duke in a statement he signed as a freshman, according to a report in Saturday's Raleigh News and Observer.
According to part of the federal indictment against summer-league coach
Myron Piggie, Maggette "submitted a false and fraudulent Student-Athlete
Statement to Duke University on Oct. 27, 1998, certifying that he had not
received payments to participate in basketball."
The NCAA requires student-athletes to sign such a statement in order to
certify their amateur status. In the statement, a player affirms that he or she
has never taken payment for competing in his or her sport.
Federal prosecutors claim Maggette received $2,000 from Piggie before
going to Duke. Maggette denies taking the money.
Should Maggette be ruled ineligible for the 1998-99 basketball
season, Duke might have to return all or part of the $470,000 it received in
NCAA Tournament earnings.
