North Carolina head coach Matt Doherty has written a letter of apology to the Duke cheerleaders after calling them "the ugliest cheerleaders in the ACC."
Doherty made the statement during a team huddle in the Tar Heels' 85-83 victory over Duke on Feb. 1. The remark appeared in The Pulse, ESPN The Magazine's Web page on ESPN.com.
Doherty, who also called the cheerleaders' coach to apologize, says he will be more careful what he tells his players in a timeout huddle.
Doherty said the comment was meant to be a joke to break the tension, but some Duke students say Doherty went too far and have complained about the comment.
