OKLAHOMA CITY -- A chronology of Abe Lemons' career as a player and coach:

  • Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Ryan.

  • Graduated from Walters High School in 1941.

  • Attended Southwestern Tech in Weatherford; Hardin College in Wichita Falls, Texas; and Oklahoma City University, where he finished a bachelor of arts degree in history and physical education in 1950.

  • Named to the All-College Tournament team in 1949, starring for OCU and coach Doyle Parrack.

  • Took over the OCU program for the 1955-56 season after serving as Parrack's assistant coach.

  • Guided Chiefs to NCAA Tournament in 1956, 1957, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1973.

  • Left Oklahoma City after the 1972-73 season to coach Texas-Pan American University.

  • Left Texas-Pan American after 1975-76 season to coach for the University of Texas.

  • Led Texas to the 1978 National Invitation Tournament championship.

  • Guided Texas to the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and the NIT in 1980; twice named Southwest Conference coach of the year.

  • Fired by Texas after the 1981-82 season and returned to OCU.

  • Retired after the 1989-1990 season. Finished with a 25-year career record of 599-343.

  • Named Sooner Athletic Conference coach of the year in 1986.

  • Guided OCU to the NAIA tournament in 1987. The team finished 34-1, its only loss in the second round of the national tournament.

  • Inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 along with Johnny Bench, Ed Gallagher and Barry Switzer.

  • Inducted into the University of Texas Athletic Department Hall of Honor in 1994.
