STANFORD, Calif. -- Josh Childress scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Stanford defeated Boston University, 61-57, in an opening round game of the Preseason NIT Monday night.
Justin Davis added 10 points and 13 rebounds as the Cardinal (1-0) improved to 60-6 in home openers.
Billy Collins scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Boston U. (0-1), which fell to 2-6 against Pac-10 teams.
Stanford hosts No. 11 Xavier, an 87-48 winner over St. Peter's, in a second-round game on Wednesday night with the winner advancing to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
Matt Lottich added 12 points for the Cardinal, and Ryan Butt had 12 for the Terriers.
Stanford, which had junior All-Americans Casey Jacobsen and Curtis Borchardt declare early for the NBA, was unranked in the initial top 25 poll, the first time its missed out in 94 weeks -- which was the second longest streak to Duke.
After Boston scored the first five points of the second half, the Cardinal went on a 17-4 run to pull ahead 36-32 with 12:23 remaining to play.
Rutgers 60, Columbia 36
Rutgers defeated Columbia for the eighth straight time and the 12th time in 13 games. The Knights will travel to North Carolina, which beat Penn State 85-55, in the second round on Wednesday night.
It was the fewest points allowed by a Rutgers team since a 30-29 loss to St. Bonaventure on Jan. 25, 1982, and the fewest the Knights allowed Columbia since a 32-31 loss in the 1926-27 season.
The game was a mismatch from the start. Rutgers had four starters return from last year's 18-13 team, and Columbia lost four starters from an 11-17 squad.
Rutgers broke the game open with a man-to-man, trapping defense that held Columbia scoreless for two long stretches in the first half. Leading 4-2, the Knights went on a 14-0 run in the next 6:33 as Columbia shot 0-for-4 with eight turnovers.
Eastern Illinois 73, Boise State 59
The Panthers' season-opening victory spoiled Greg Graham's coaching debut at Boise State.
Eastern Illinois held a 36-28 lead at halftime and quickly took control of the game behind a 12-point scoring spree by Domercant in the opening minutes of the second half. Domercant's layup with 13:18 remaining gave the Panthers a 57-36 lead, and the Panthers were never threatened.
The Broncos cut their second-half deficit to 12 points three times, but could get not closer.
Domercant, who added five rebounds and two assists, hit five out of eight 3-point field goals and J.R. Reynolds added 16 points and hit four out of eight 3 pointers for Eastern Illinois. |
